WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) - November is National Diabetes Month, and there are things to learn.

Like don’t say the ‘D’ word. As in “diabetic.”

“That’s no longer correct language. It’s a person living with diabetes because it doesn’t encompass our whole life,” explains Teresa Intorcia, a diabetes educator and registered dietician at Samaritan Medical Center.

Another thing: diabetes is not caused by you eating too much or eating too much sugar. It’s not a moral failure. It’s your pancreas not doing its job.

True, losing weight and eating better helps, but even there, you have more choices than you might expect.

“You’re gonna get out of food jail” if you go to one of the classes Samaritan offers, Teresa says.

So what should you do if you suspect diabetes?

Get a diagnosis from your doctor.

Meet with a diabetes educator or registered dietician. You can reach Teresa at 315-785-4667, or tintorcia@shsny.com.
