Friday Sports: Indian River Football advances to State Regionals

PHILADELPHIA, New York (WWNY) - The Indian River Warriors hope to move a step closer to a state championship in the quarterfinals Saturday.

Winning the Section 3 Class B Finals on a 2 point conversion by quarterback Riley Alexander with 32 seconds left: For the Warriors, it ended 2 years of disappointment in the Sectional Championship Game. In 2021, the Warriors lost to CBA in the Section 3 Class A Title game, and last year, the Warriors dropped a 14-0 decision to Homer.

Next up for Indian River, a State Class B regional contest against the top ranked team in the state, Maine Endwell on Saturday at 3 p.m. in Vestal.

Maine Endwell comes into the game with a perfect 10-0 record and are averaging 54 points a game while giving up just over 15 points a contest.

What will be the key to knock off such a well balanced team and advance to the State Final Four?

It will be another tough battle for the Warriors as they look to bring home the program’s second state title on the gridiron.

In the State Class C Football playoffs at OFA, Gouverneur met Fonda Fultonville.

In the first quarter, the Braves strike first when Peyton Webber takes the handoff and is pulled over the goal line for a Braves touchdown.

Gouverneur stuffs the two-point conversion, keeping the score 6-0.

Quarterback Holden Stowell rolls left, fakes the pass, tucks, runs and hurdles for the Wildcats’ biggest gain of 27 yards, but the drive ends inside the 25.

In the second quarter, a handoff to Jose Vargas keeps the legs churning 13 yards for the touchdown.

On the two-point conversion: Keegan Croucher to Coach Ladd complete. 14-0 Braves.

Fonda Fultonville blanks Gouverneur 22-0.

Canton swimmer Gretchen Braun is in position to win a pair of State Championships at the New York State Swimming Championships.

Braun set a new league record and earned All-American consideration in the 100 Freestyle with a time of 50.53, which has her ranked 1st heading to the finals.

Braun also set a new league record and earned All-American consideration in the 100 Backstroke with a time of 55.61 which has her ranked 1st heading to the finals Saturday.
