Sunday Sports: Indian River Warriors Football wins Section 3 Class B Title

SYRACUSE, New York (WWNY) - Indian River and General Brown were in search of Section 3 Football titles at the JMA Wireless Dome in the Class B and C Title games.

In the Class B Title game, Indian River met undefeated New Hartford, the Warriors looked to snap a two game losing streak in the Sectional Championship Game.

In the 1st quarter, John Vitullo hit Peyton Way for a 21 yard touchdown: 7-0 New Hartford.

Indian River answered when Riley Alexander found Colton White for a 10 yard strike: 8-7 Warriors.

In the 2nd quarter, Indian River took the lead on an Ethan Hattori 10 yard touchdown run: 14-7 Indian River.

New Hartford ties it up on a 28 yard touchdown run up the gut by Cole Raux to make it 14 all at the half.

In the 3rd quarter, New Hartford takes the lead when Raux plows in from a yard out: 21-14 Spartans.

Late in the 3rd, it’s Derek Jones down the sideline for a 21 yard touchdown: Indian River down 21-20.

Late in the 4th quarter, the score was 27-20 New Hartford when Fred Haynes Jr plows in from 5 yards out and the Warriors are down by 1.

Indian River goes for 2 and the win and Alexander takes it in on the keeper.

Indian River wins the Class B title, beating New Hartford 28-27.

In the Class C Title game, General Brown faced Adirondack.

The Wildcats would strike first in this one as John Hennessey takes it in for the score: 8-0 Wildcats.

In the 3rd quarter, the game was tied at 8, when Douglas Jarvie finds the edge and the end zone. The Lions go on top 14-8.

The Wildcats answer. It’s Hennessey on the keeper for the 19 yard touchdown: Adirondack up 16-14.

The Lions answer in the 4th when Cam Thomas goes in from a couple of yards out: 20-16 General Brown.

Adirondack counters on Braden White’s 5 yard touchdown scamper: 22-20 Adirondack.

The Lions have an answer as quarterback Aidan McManaman gets free and takes it 64 yards on the keeper to put General Brown back up 26-22.

But with 24 seconds left, Adirondack answers with the game winner as they end the Lions season and a chance at a repeat with a 30-26 win.

The Gouverneur Wildcats advanced to the State Class C Quarterfinals on Friday night with a thrilling 13-10 come from behind victory over Saranac Central in Plattsburgh.

The Wildcats found themselves down 10-0 in the 4th quarter, but scored 13 unanswered points to win it including the game winning touchdown with under 30 seconds left in the game.

Gouverneur will next face Fonda Fultonville in a quarterfinal contest this Friday night at 7 p.m. at OFA with a trip to the Final 4 on the line.

”We had to figure out what we could do and do it, and our guys did it. There was a series of events that had to occur for us to be in that situation and all those events occurred. They had a bad punt late in the game that we took advantage of. We had an onside kick that we recovered late in the game. That had to happen. We had to convert a 4th down. A series of events that had to happen to put ourselves in that situation and it happened,” said Gouverneur Coach Sean Devlin.

On Wednesday morning at Cheel Arena, a new twist was added to the Route 11 rivalry between the Clarkson and St. Lawrence Women’s Hockey teams as the 2 met in a top 10 battle.

The 2 teams played a rare morning game in front of around 2,700 school kids from all over the North Country.

Any student in 8th grade or below that attended the game was given a ticket to a future Clarkson Women’s Hockey Game and the Director of Cheel Arena, Logan Norris, says there was a reason for that.

”Our purpose is to give an experience to not only the area school kids who may not get to come see this, but to our teams as well. It’s no secret that sometimes the women’s [team] isn’t as supportive as it should, and this should be one of the better crowds they play in front of in their career. We hope people are going. Our attendance on the women’s side is growing. We hope this grows it even more. It’s a really good product,” said Norris.

The SU Men’s Basketball Team was back in action at the JMA Wireless Dome on Tuesday night as they host the Colgate Red Raiders.

The Orange have lost the last 2 meetings between the 2 teams.

Syracuse enters the game with a 2-0 record. Their latest win an 89-77 victory over Canisius on Wednesday.

Orange Coach Adrian Autry says while the wins haven’t been pretty, he’s been impressed with the grit his team has shown so far this season.

”I think just kind of staying with it because I thought both games got cut close, and us getting together and building it back up and coming out with a win, I just think that type of fight. We could have easily been in a 1 point game in any of these games. We did a good job of locking in and building that lead back up and come away with a win. So early, just their grit, just their grit, just their grit,” said SU Coach Adrian Autry.
