(WWNY) - Student athletes were racing for the finish line and spiking the ball in Section X cross country and volleyball championships.

The Section X Class B, C, and D cross country championships were held Thursday, starting at the foot of the U.S.-Canada bridge and on the trail along the St. Lawrence River in Ogdensburg.

On the girls’ side, Norwood-Norfolk’s Madison Carista set the pace and finished in first place with a time of 19:18. Canton’s Bennett Schmitt followed just 14 seconds behind to claim second place. The Flyers’ Allie Snell (from Parishville) clocked in third at 20:08, followed by teammate Rachel Hewey at 20:51. Rounding out the Top Five was Canton’s Aurora Casserly at 21:10.

By division, Malone claimed the Class B girls’ championship, Norwood-Norfolk in Class C, and Brushton-Moira in Class D.

On the boys’ side, Norwood-Norfolk’s Dominic Fiacco finished first at 16:06, outrunning the rest of the field by more than a full minute. Canton’s Lucas Watts clocked in second, 66 seconds off the lead, with Golden Bears’ teammates Aiden Rodriguez four seconds later at 17:16, and Rylan Powell at 17:23. Massena’s Andrew David finished fifth at 17:26.

By division, Malone laid claimed the Class B boys’ championship, Canton captured the Class C title, and Brushton-Moira won in Class D.

Next up for the qualifying runners: the New York State Cross Country Championship at Vernon-Verona-Sherrill High School, on Saturday, November 11.

It was Ogdensburg vs. Salmon River for the Section X Class B volleyball title.

Three nail-biters started the match. In the seesaw first set, tied at 16-16, OFA went on a mini run to build a four-point lead. But Salmon River rallied with the final six points, including a final spike by Audrey Terrance, to beat the Blue Devils 25-23.

The second set was even tighter, going 19-19 before OFA used a four-point spurt and a final aces to capture the set, also 25-23.

In set three, Ogdensburg dominated early, leaping to an 18-5 margin, then saw it all disappear. Salmon River went on an 18-4 run to steal the lead. But with two aces and a Shamrock miss, OFA survived another 25-23 score.

Set four began 14-14, but the Blue Devils rallied for a 20-16 advantage, then closed out the winning set behind Katie Cole’s service run, giving OFA a 25-19 win and the Section X Class B championship.

It was Canton vs. Tupper Lake for the Class C volleyball championship.

Canton defeated Tupper 3 sets to 1 – 15-25, 25-15, 25-18, 25-15 – for the Class C title.

For the Golden Bears, Josie Gabriel led the way with 10 kills, 4 assists, 11 points, and 3 aces. Emma Logan contributed 7 assists, 10 points and 2 aces. Laurel Whittier chipped in 6 assists and 8 points, and Haley Perrin: 4 kills, 4 assists, 10 points and 1 ace.

For Tupper Lake, Mary Becker played well out of the outside with 9 service points, 6 points, 2 aces, 3 kills and 2 digs.
