Thursday morning sports: Indian River, Madrid-Waddington take v’ball crowns

WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) - Indian River and Chateaugay took Section 10 volleyball championships Wednesday.

In Class A play, Massena raced to an 18-8 lead over Indian River, but the Warriors roared back to win the first set 25-22, taking 13 of the last 14 points. The Warriors then ran to a 25-20 win in the second set and a 25-18 win in the third set, and the championship.

In Class D play, Chateaugay got off to a dominating start, taking the first set from Madrid-Waddington 25-8. In the second set, Madrid-Waddington adjusted its net play and took a 12 point lead. Chateaugay rallied to 23-18, but Madrid-Waddington sealed the win 25-18.

In the third set, Chateaugay led 19-18, then broke the set open to win 25-19.

In the fourth set, Madrid-Waddington overpowered Chateaugay 25-9.

Finally, in the fifth and deciding set, Madrid-Waddington scored a 15-10 win, and the championship.

In other sports news from Wednesday:

- In high school swimming, the Watertown 400 Free Relay team placed second in Section 3 Class B championships, setting a new Frontier League record time.

- In girls state soccer playoffs, Schalmont beat Malone 7-1, Voorheesville beat Salmon River 3-0 and Northern Adirondack beat St. Lawrence Central 5-1.

- In boys state soccer playoffs, Plattsburgh beat Massena 3-0.
