WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) - With girls basketball season starting in about a month, there’s a need for referees.

“We really need new officials,” said Jerry Levine, who heads the local officials group for girls basketball.

Some current officials are out with injuries, he said, and the average age of officials is getting older.

“We have a lot of veteran officials on the board,” Levine said. “We really want to see more girls get involved with our program.”

Officiating is open to anyone - maybe you’re an ex-player or an enthusiast. Classes are underway on Wednesday nights from 5 PM to 6:30 PM at Ohio Street School in Watertown.

You get paid to officiate games, and there’s the satisfaction of doing something worthwhile.

“I like to give back to the game,” Levine said.
