Saturday Sports: Gouverneur Wildcats advance to state competition

GOUVERNEUR, New York (WWNY) - The Section 10 Class C Football Championship was up for grabs in Gouverneur as the Wildcats hosted St. Lawrence Central with a trip to States on the line.

It was Holden Stowell to Raine Rumble on a 22-yard touchdown pass to make it 7-0 Wildcats.

Vinny Thomas takes the handoff up the middle, extending the lead to 14-0.

Stowell goes “fly” to Rumble again with 25 yards to score: 21-0 Wildcats.

Then it was Thomas on a 55-yard scamper to the House: 28-0 Gouverneur.

Senior lineman Owen Siebels is converted to rusher and takes his first-ever handoff for a touchdown.

Then it was Connor Witherell on the sweep for six more.

Wildcats advance to States with a 55-0 win.

On the soccer field, Beaver River met Sauquoit Valley at SUNY Cortland for the Section 3 Class C Championship.

Early on in this one, Beaver River goalie Ella St. Croix would be hurt on this save. She would have to leave the game.

Sauquoit Valley capitalizes when Olivia Kalil bangs home the loose ball to put Sauquoit Valley up 1-0.

Later in the 1st half, Kalil jumps on the loose ball and scores her 2nd of the game: 2-0 Sauquoit Valley at the half.

Sauquoit Valley hands Beaver River its first loss of the season 4-0, winning the Section 3 Class C title.

Up north at Potsdam High School, St. Lawrence Central met Brushton Moira for the Girls’ Section 10 Class C Soccer title.

Audrey-Ann Sweet with her 2nd goal makes it 2-0.

Addison Mitchell tries to get the Panthers on the board but Kalissa Young makes a diving stop.

Larries’ Mary-Cate Dow drills a goal, upping the lead to 3-0 Larries.

Courtney Moreau slams the final goal as St. Lawrence Central blanks Brushton Moira 4-0 to claim the Class C crown.

At SUNY Potsdam, Salmon River and Potsdam squared off for the Girls’ Class B Championship.

Next, it was Kelsey Barkley with a shot on net. Potsdam’s Lola Buckley grabs the save.

Off the corner kick, Lindsey Durant bounces the feed but it was Barkley again with a key save.

Off the direct kick, Kaylynn Leaf serves the ball in the crease as Calysta Cree taps in the goal.

Salmon River shuts out Potsdam 2-0 to win the Class B Championship.

On the boys’ side, Canton faced Salmon River at SUNY Potsdam for the Boys’ Section 10 Class B crown.

The Shamrocks try to poke the Bear early but miss just wide on the shot.

The Bear is awake. Ethan Francey connects on the first goal: 1-0 Canton.

From Tom Husinec’s corner kick, it was Francey on the header as he ups the lead to 2-0.

It was Francey again, this time with a magic trick through the scrum for the hat trick: 3-0 Bears.

Ryan Jones is dead-on with the fourth goal and Husinec would net the final goal.

Canton beats Salmon River 5-0, winning the Class B title and earning a trip to States.

At Potsdam High School, St. Lawrence Central met Brushton Moira for the Boys’ Class C Championship.

From the scrum, Jordan Davey pokes the ball into the net: 1-0 Panthers.

The corner kick, served into the crease, Davey redirects: 2-0 Brushton-Moira.

Tristan Russell collects and converts the third goal.

The Larries get on the board early in the second half and it was Merrick Frary with the goal.

Brushton Moira beats St. Lawrence Central 3-1 for the Class C crown.

On the ice, a Top 20 battle at Cheel Arena as 6th ranked Clarkson met 14th ranked Princeton in ECAC play.

In the 1st period, Clarkson strikes first when Nichole Gosling dents the back of the net on a power play tally: 1-0 Clarkson.

That’s your only goal as Clarkson blanks Princeton 1-0.

Down the road in Canton, a Top 10 battle as 10th ranked St. Lawrence hosted 5th ranked Quinnipiac.

Less than 5 minutes in, St. Lawrence takes the lead when Sarah Marchand lights the lamp: 1-0 St. Lawrence.

St. Lawrence goes on to beat Quinnipiac 4-1.
