Saturday Sports: Soccer, Football and Swimming fill the day

COPENHAGEN, New York (WWNY) - The Girls’ Section 3 Soccer Playoffs continued Saturday with three Frontier League teams in action.

In Copenhagen, a Girls’ Section 3 Class D Quarterfinal Matchup as Copenhagen hosted LaFargeville.

Less than 2 minutes in, Copenhagen gets on the board when Samantha Stokely goes far corner for the tally: 1-0 Copenhagen.

Midway through the 1st half, Stokely strikes for her 2nd goal of the game: 2-0.

Stokely would record the hat trick as Copenhagen blanks LaFargeville 4-0.

In the Girls’ Section 10 Class B play-in game, Potsdam hosted O.F.A.

The Sandstoners controlled the first half. OFA’s Julia Ives delivered several key saves. Potsdam’s Taylor LaBarge netted the game’s first goal in the 20th minute.

Lucy VanLeuven expanded the lead to 2-0, just four minutes into the second half.

Potsdam would get the benefit of a penalty kick and Daly Duffy connects to make it 3-0 Potsdam.

Potsdam blanks O.F.A. 3-0.

In the Girls’ Section 10 Class D opening round, Parishville Hopkinton hosted St. Regis Falls.

The Panthers controlled most of the first half, but nearly help the Saints with a redirect that just missed their own net.

The Saints’ best change came from Josie Bonilla, but is thwarted by Panthers keeper Kelsey Farnsworth.

Eliza Colbert would score both goals for Parishville Hopkinton in the second half, Sophie Merriman had an assist.

Parishville Hopkinton shuts out St. Regis Falls 2-0.

Heuvelton hosted Madrid Waddington in another Class D opening round game.

Kylie McCluskey drills the ball on net, rolling off the back of keeper Aoife Burke, who grabs the ball in the scrum.

Chastity Johnson crosses to Kathryn Cunningham, who delivers the goal: 2-0 Bulldogs.

Then it was Rylin McAllister on the attack, with the cross. McCluskey redirects to make it 3-0.

Lead pass through the crease, McCluskey again scores: 4-0.

On a penalty kick, McAllister tickles twine as Heuvelton beats Madrid Waddington 6-0.

On the boys’ side, Edwards Knox hosted Madrid Waddington in Class D opening round play.

Edwards Knox’s Evan Baker changes direction and fires a shot that rings off the post to Grant Hayes for the save.

Kale Jamieson gets off a close-range shot, just missing high.

Then there was a left-wing attack by Cooper Allen as he lifts the shot, off Hayes’ fingertips: 4-0 Cougars.

Baker will try again, this time over the keeper and into the net.

Edwards Knox downs Madrid Waddington 5-0.

Turning to the gridiron, in Section 3 Class A Football from Watertown High the Cyclones hosted Fulton.

In the 1st quarter, Fulton was driving but the Cyclones Justin Draught comes up with the pick of the Anthony Mills pass.

On the very next play, John Flowers hit Marquel Jefferson on the slant and he takes it to the house for the touchdown: 7-0 Cyclones.

But Fulton comes back to beat Watertown 41-28.

In NAC Football from Canton, the Golden Bears hosted Massena.

With two minutes left in the half, Connor Eastwood on the two-yard keeper: 24-0 Massena.

Eastwood, passing into zone coverage, gets picked off on a 20-yard return by Canton’s Matthew Bradish-Hayes.

That sets up a 15-yard touchdown rush by Brandon O’Shea: 24-6 Massena.

In the 4th quarter, quarterback Charlie Todd’s two-yard keeper finished the scoring.

Massena beats Canton 24-12.

On the college gridiron, St. Lawrence hosted RPI in Liberty League Play.

Sterling-Walker-Sutton receives the punt for the Engineers and sprints the sideline 39 yards to the House. 7-0 RPI.

On play action, SLU quarterback Will Lederman fakes the handoff and passes to Cole Salyards 11 yards to the end zone.

Clayton Fogler adds the extra-point kick. The game was tied 7-7.

The Saints fall to RPI 37-7.

In the pool, the Girls’ Frontier League Swimming Championships took place at Indian River.

Watertown would claim the team championship, with Beaver River in 2nd place, South Jeff in 3rd, Lowville in 4th, Indian River in 5th, Thousand Islands in 6th, Carthage 7th and South Lewis in 8th.

Watertown’s 400 Freestyle Relay Team would set a new Frontier League Meet record as well as a new pool record.
