WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) - Jeffery Curtacci, owner of GreatChopps Cosplay and Creation, remembers first getting into costume making as a boy.

“I started costuming as a kid at Halloween,” he said. “We made costumes. My grandparents would help me with that.”

His skills have grown since then and now he makes costumes that are both complex and simple.

Although some projects take extra time and tools like a 3D printer, many of his outfits are made of simple materials lying around the house. A Captain America top is made from a long sleeve shirt he sewed.

“The under pieces you see coming through are mesh pieces from a bag,” he said.

“Halloween itself, as well as costume making, is making something out of whatever you have, out of nothing, and just enjoying the process itself,” Curtacci said.

If you want to try making your costume this year, he has a few tips.

“Foam is an easy medium to start with,” he said, “or even cardboard.”

He says it’s all about being creative — and having fun.

“If you want to costume, costume,” he said. “It enhances other people’s experience when you bring a level of fun to an environment. It brings other people up as well.”
