WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) - It costs less to fill up this Thanksgiving than it did in 2022.

AAA puts the average price of a gallon of gas at $3.58 in Jefferson County, $3.71 in St. Lawrence County and $3.73 in Lewis County.

That’s 25 to 30 cents less per gallon than a year ago.

Why? Demand for gas is decreasing, and with it, oil prices.

AAA estimates 40 million Americans will drive over the extended holiday weekend.

“Definitely, if anybody is taking a road trip maybe plan ahead and get to the gas station early so you’re not in a rush, just because so many people are going to be hitting the roads, you definitely want to get that gasoline,” said Valerie Puma, from AAA.

Phillip Blades was pumping $40 dollars of gas in Watertown for his road trip with his wife back home to Albany. It’s his first time going home for thanksgiving in a while.

“I just got released from prison this morning, and I am happy and blessed this is our first thanksgiving holiday in eight and a half years, and I’m blessed, I’m happy, I’m ready to get home,” he said.

Blades’ wife says lower gas prices came in handy as she drove to the north country from Albany. New York state’s gas price average is $3.60.

“With the inflation of the world, and the price of food, and just the price of living alone, to be able to you know afford to pick him up and spend $40 and get home to our families is amazing in this world today,” said Sherina Blades.

If you’re traveling Thanksgiving day, the best time is before noon.
